Gautam Khaitan under the scanner again PanamaPapers

Much before the Panama Papers leak, Gautam Khaitan, Managing Partner at OP Khaitan & Co. was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on 23 September 2014 in relation to the AgustaWestland Chopper Deal. After being released on bail in 2015, the Indian Express has now reported that Khaitan’s name has cropped up in the Panama Papers list..The documents on the basis of which the arrest was made indicated,.“criminal conspiracy to make alterations in the requirement of helicopter specifications which suited AgustaWestland.“.Khaitan, who was a Director of the accused company, was arrested under the provision of Prevention of Money Laundering Act after searches were conducted at two of his premises in Delhi..How so?.Back in March 2013, Khaitan wrote a reference letter to Waterman Trust Company Limited in favour of Navin Mehra, a Director in two offshore entities registered by Mossack Fonseca..Gautam Khaitan’s New Delhi address (as investigated in the Mossack Fonseca files) appears to be the same as the registered office of Aeromatrix Info Solutions Private Limited in which Khaitan was a director (till 2012) along with an alleged middleman in the Finmeccania deal..On his part, Mehra claims that all remittances made to the two offshore companies were in compliance with the concerned laws..The ED officials have requested a translated version of the Milan Court of Appeals judgment where Khaitan’s name has been mentioned several times.
