Former SC court masters arrested for wrong information in Anil Ambani appearance order

Two months after they were sacked for tampering with an order of the Supreme Court in Ericsson’s contempt plea against Reliance Communications and Anil Ambani, two former court masters of the Supreme Court have been arrested..As per news reports, former court masters Manav Sharma and Tapan Kumar Chakaraborty were arrested by the Delhi Crime Branch for apparently tampering with a Supreme Court order dated January 7 this year..The Court had issued notice to Anil Ambani, seeking his personal appearance. However, when the order was uploaded on the website it read:.“personal appearance of the alleged contemnor(s) dispensed with.”.This had been brought to the Court’s notice by counsel for Ericsson, and a corrected order was subsequently uploaded on the website on January 10..After a preliminary inquiry, it was found that the omission of the word “not” in the order was not accidental..Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi later passed an order on the administrative side, dismissing the two employees..The Supreme Court later held Reliance Communications and its Chairperson Anil Ambani guilty of contempt of court in the petition filed by Ericsson..The Court further held that the unconditional apology given by Reliance cannot be accepted, in light of its cavalier attitude towards the highest Court of the land..Reliance Communications, headed by Anil Ambani, was therefore directed to pay Ericsson Rs. 453 crore within four weeks. This is in addition to the Rs. 118 crore which Reliance had undertaken to deposit with the Court Registry..In case of failure to pay, Chairperson Anil Ambani, who gave the undertaking to pay, will have to undergo three months’ imprisonment, the Bench had stated.
