The Supreme Court of India has today designated five lawyers as Senior Advocates..The five lawyers are:.Mahalakshmi PavaniRana MukherjeeSanjay HegdeSubramonium PrasadV Mohana.This decision was taken in a full court meeting of the Supreme Court judges held today evening..Mahalakshmi Pavani and V Mohana have made their way into the small list of women lawyers who have been designated Senior Advocates by the Supreme Court..Pavani graduated from Bangalore University and enrolled at the Bar in 1992. She shifted her practice to Delhi in 1998. She is the President of the Supreme Court Women Lawyers Association which is involved in a lot of pro bono litigation. She is at the forefront of the petition seeking gender sensitization of advocates ML Sharma and AP Singh as also the case relating to the harassment of advocate Ambika Das..Speaking to Bar & Bench, Pavani had this to say:.“I am too happy and feel honoured. I think the Supreme Court has started recognising young woman lawyers. It was my first application and I am glad that it went through.”.Sanjay Hegde graduated in law from KC Law College, Mumbai. He did his LLM from Bombay University and started his law practice in the year 1989 with the Bombay based law firm, Mulla & Mulla. He shifted to Delhi two years later and worked with the then Attorney general G Ramaswamy to whom he “owes a lot”..“I am very glad. It is a greater responsibility. I am thankful that the Supreme Court has given me this additional responsibility and I will work harder to live up to the standards. Designation is not necessarily an achievement but a recognition and I feel that courts should not make it hard for lawyers to be designated as Senior Advocate”, said Hegde..Interestingly, Hegde and Mohana were registered as Advocates on Record on the same day – May 9, 1996 while Subramonium Prasad was also registered in the same year though on a different date..Rana Mukherjee, Subramonium Prasad and V Mohana were not available for comment at the time of publishing the story.
