The sixth edition of Virudhaka, National Law Institute University, Bhopal‘s flagship sports fest will be held this year from October 16 to 19, 2014. .In an e-mail interview with Bar & Bench, Sushrut Meena, Convener, Sports Committee at NLIU talks about this year‘s event and the origins of the inter-collegiate sports festival..B&B: When was Virudhaka initiated? How has the journey been so far? How many colleges are participating this year? .SM: In the year 2008, a handful of resourceful NLIU students took the initiative to organize a sporting event that could bring together students from various law schools of the country to rub shoulders in a competitive environment involving various sports, and thus Virudhaka was born. In the past years, we have sought to bring about betterment in the quality as well as the general standards expected from any sports festival in the country. This year, we will be organizing the sixth edition of the festival and we expect over 30 teams from all over India. Building on the success of Virudhaka 2013, this year we hope to add another feather to the cap. The entire journey, since Virudhaka’s inception in 2008, has been a remarkable experience in itself. But we feel that there is much more room to grow and excel, which is what we look forward to achieving in Virudhaka 2014..B&B: Such large events must demand a lot of financial resources. How do you manage the funding?.SM: Primarily, the NLIU administration bears the expenses of the logistics and promotion of Virudhaka. In addition, we have various partners who help us promote as well as uphold the standards which make Virudhaka successful. “Alma Mater” has been kind enough to provide us with support when it comes to the merchandise. “Health Plus” as our beverage partner in previous editions has provided the participants with energy drinks before and after the events. .B&B: In its latest edition, have any new events been added?.SM: Every year, we strive to make additions that fosters attraction and makes the experience memorable for the participants of Virudhaka. This year, in order to have more options for women participants, we have added women’s volleyball to the numerous other events we organise. We hope that this initiative will help increase participation as well as make Virudhaka more open and versatile as an option to any student willing to participate.
