Senior Advocate Fali S Nariman will represent former Supreme Court judge Justice Markandey Katju in the suo moto contempt case against him..Justice Katju had, in the recent past, ruffled quite a few feathers with his posts on social media about Supreme Court judges. The final nail in the coffin were his posts on the Soumya murder case, in which he had come down upon Justice Ranjan Gogoi, the presiding judge in the case..When the review petition against that judgment was filed, the court had taken cognizance of Justice Katju’s Facebook posts and issued notice to him, seeking his assistance in the matter..The former judge had obliged and made himself available on November 11 for the hearing in the review petition. The court, however, not only dismissed the review petition but also issued notice to Katju J. for contempt of court..The outspoken former judge had again taken to Facebook to express his anguish at the events that transpired in court on November 11. He had also put up a very critical post against Justice Ranjan Gogoi and his connections with Delhi High Court judge Justice Valmiki Mehta..However, none of the posts criticising judges are now present on his official Facebook page..Judging by this new development, it does seem that he has been advised to tone down his online criticism against sitting judges. Whether he will offer an unconditional apology in the contempt case is what now remains to be seen.
