Attorney General for India, KK Venugopal has hailed the Judgment of the Supreme Court in the Privacy case as an “extra-ordinary verdict”.

He was speaking at the farewell function organised by the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) for outgoing Chief Justice of India, Justice JS Khehar.

It is “an extraordinary judgment which has propelled Privacy into a fundamental right”, he said.

Venugopal had appeared for the Central government in the case and had argued against Privacy as a Fundamental Right.

Interestingly, Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad, while welcoming the verdict yesterday, had told that the Central government was of the view that Right to Privacy should be a fundamental Right.

This statement had invited sharp criticism as even the judgment of the Supreme Court clearly mentioned that the Union government had opposed privacy as a fundamental right.
