Passing a direction that could have significant implications, the Madras High Court has asked the Central government to consider entrusting the functions of the Bar Council of India (BCI) to an expert body, reports The Times of India..The interim order was passed by Justice N Kirubakaran in a petition by one SM Anantha Murugan, seeking a direction to prevent persons with criminal antecedents from entering the legal profession..As per the report, the court suggested handing over of the BCI’s functions to an expert body headed by a retired judge of the Supreme Court, either permanently or at least till the Advocates Act is suitably amended. The report also states that the Court suggested doing away with the three-year law degree course at the earliest..The Court has also directed the Centre to revisit the Advocates Act or to introduce new provisions prohibiting entry of criminals, and communal and extremist elements into the profession..The Court has also recommended reducing the number of seats in law colleges and giving recognition to only one Bar Association for one court..More details awaited.
