National University of Juridical Sciences, Kolkata (NUJS) has come up with an initiative in the form of a diploma course in Entrepreneurship Administration and Business Laws to support the budding startup culture in India through innovation. The diploma course also aims to make law students more employable with startups and SMEs..The course has been designed by iPleaders, a startup run by two NUJS alumni who recently quit Trilegal to focus on a startup of their own. iPleaders also organizes business law workshops for entrepreneurs and has been actively consulting startup companies. The Diploma in Entrepreneurship Administration and Business Laws, recognized by NUJS is being conceptualized, coordinated and marketed by iPleaders with assistance from industry stakeholders. Abhyudaya Agarwal, one of the founders of iPleaders told Bar & Bench that “the cost of finding and engaging effective business lawyers in India is prohibitively high for most entrepreneurs. Startups often suffer for this as they enter into under-negotiated contracts, and even one sided investment agreements that go against their interest later. Timely and cost effective legal compliance is also a major issue for startups.”.This is an online course and will be developed and taught by a panel of professionals from law firms, corporate and government departments with an intensive industry experience in the relevant domain. According to Ramanuj, “When we went to law school, we learnt the Companies Act, but no one taught us how to incorporate a company. We learnt theoretical aspects of contract law and read cases, but didn’t know how to draft a simple non-disclosure agreement. Similarly, in the whole IP course no one taught us how to register a trademark or copyright. Once you are out of law school, no one cares about your theoretical knowledge of law; they want you to solve their real life problems.
