Designations in the SC: Rohatgi made amicus, Dave pushes for talks between Bar and Bench

Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi has been appointed amicus in Senior Advocate Indira Jaising’s challenge to the designation process in the Supreme Court. Jaising has alleged that the process is non-transparent method, and ought to be reviewed..As was the case during the last hearing, a battery of Senior Advocates were present in court today before TS Thakur and Gopala Gowda JJ..Those who were in support of Jaising’s petition included the likes of Abhishek Manu Singhvi, Rajeev Dhavan, Shekhar Naphade, Kapil Sibal and MN Krishnamani. The Supreme Court Bar Association was represented by its President Dushyant Dave while the Supreme Court was being represented by advocate ADN Rao..Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi appeared for the Central government. When the hearing began, Dushyant Dave said that this issue could be resolved with the members of the Bench and the Bar “sitting across the table”..However, others including Shekhar Naphade was in favour of judiciary laying down some guidelines with regard to the designation process. After much deliberation, the parties agreed to the proposition that Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi be appointed as amicus..Members of the Bar will now forward their suggestions to the Attorney General who will then place his opinion before the Court after considering the various recommendations.
