The Delhi High Court today issued notice to Arnab Goswami and Republic TV seeking their response to a plea filed by Congress MP Shashi Tharoor alleging misreportage in the controversy surrounding his late wife Sunanda Pushkar’s death..The interim application was filed by Tharoor in the ongoing defamation case against Goswami for allegedly maligning the Congress MP after certain audio tapes were played on Republic TV indicating foul play in the death of Sunanda Pushkar..Appearing for Tharoor, Senior Advocate and Congress Leader Salman Khurshid argued that Sunanda’s demise should not be called a murder, as it is yet to be established as to what caused the death. He further contended that Tharoor is being called names by the channel and its lead anchor Goswami. This contention had been raised by Khurshid in the previous hearings as well, after which Justice Manmohan had asked Goswami to tone down the rhetoric..Representing Goswami, Senior Advocate Sandeep Sethi denied any name calling on the part of the channel. He stated that it is Tharoor who has been using objectionable words against the channel through his tweets..Sethi also submitted that since an FIR has been lodged under Section 302 of the IPC in Pushkar’s case, the channel is not wrong in referring to the death as “murder”. He further submitted that the present application amounts to a proxy war against BJP MP Subramanian Swamy’s PIL seeking a court-monitored investigation into Pushkar’s death..The Single Judge Bench of Justice Manmohan, who has been hearing multiple cases against the newly launched Republic TV, asked the channel to refrain from any sort of name calling and insinuations. He also observed that Tharoor’s right to silence on this sensitive issue must be honoured..The matter will be next heard on August 16..Image taken from here.
