A Delhi Court today deferred hearing in a plea seeking the issuance of warrant against the four convicts in the Nirbhaya gang rape case..The plea to expedite the execution of the convicts was preferred by Nirbhaya’s parents..The Court of Additional Sessions Judge Satish Arora today adjourned the case in the view of the review petition preferred by one of the accused, Akshay Kumar against his conviction before the Supreme Court..Noting the fact that the Supreme Court had listed the review petition for consideration on December 17, Judge Arora said that a death warrant would be issued after the pending legal remedies have been exhausted..On December 16, 2012, news broke of six men in Delhi having brutally gang-raped a young woman, later named ‘Nirbhaya’, in a moving bus. The victim succumbed to her injuries two weeks later at a hospital in Singapore. The six accused were apprehended by the police..Of the six accused, the main accused committed suicide in Tihar jail during the course of the trial and the juvenile accused was sentenced to three years in a remand home upon conviction. The remaining four were handed a death penalty by the Additional Sessions Judge..The four convicts had then approached the Delhi High Court in appeal. After the High Court upheld the lower court verdict, the Supreme Court too upheld the death penalty in May 2017..In July 2018, the Supreme Court dismissed review petitions filed by three of the accused i.e Mukesh, Vinay and Pawan..Counsel appearing for State, Prosecutors Irfan Ahmed and Rajeev Mohan today argued that nothing prevented the Court from issuing the death warrant. It was argued that once the order of sentence was confirmed, the Court was under no bar to issue a death warrant..The Court, however, said,.“At least I have to wait till the time (Akshay Kumar’s) review is pending.
