Debasish Kar Gupta J. to be Acting Chief Justice of Calcutta HC from Sept 25 [Read Notification]

The Central Government has notified that Justice Debasish Kar Gupta will be taking over as Acting Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court following the impending retirement of Chief Justice Jyotirmay Bhattacharya.

Chief Justice Bhattacharya is due to retire from office on September 25. Accordingly, the notification issued yesterday states that Justice Debasish Kar Gupta, being the next senior most judge of the High Court, will be tasked with the duties of the Chief Justice from the said date.

“In exercise of the powers conferred by Article 223 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Debasish Kar Gupta, senior-most Judge of Calcutta High Court to perform the duties of the Chief Justice of that High Court with effect from 25th September, 2018 consequent upon the retirement of Shri Jyotirmay Bhattacharya, Chief Justice, Calcutta High Court.

Following his enrollment in 1982, Justice Gupta’s areas of legal practice included Constitutional law and civil matters. He was designated a Senior Advocate in 2005. In June 2006, he was made a permanent judge of the Calcutta High Court.
