Collegium recommends two addl judges of Allahabad HC to be made permanent

The Supreme Court Collegium has recommended that two additional judges of the Allahabad High Court, Justices Krishna Singh, and Rajiv Lochan Mehrotra, be made permanent judges.

A total of eight names were recommended by the Allahabad High Court, but the Collegium saw it fit to look into the cases of only these two judges, who are due to retire within the coming two months. The proposal pertaining to make the other six judges permanent will be taken up at an appropriate stage, the Collegium resolution notes.

After considering the material on record, the Collegium of Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices Jasti Chelameswar and Ranjan Gogoi gave their assent to make the two judges permanent.

The Allahabad High Court has a working strength of 97 judges, as against a sanctioned strength of 160 judges.

Recently, the Collegium had reiterated its recommendation to make another additional judge of the High Court permanent. However, Justice Ramendra Singh, who is presently serving at the Punjab & Haryana High Court, has been retained as an additional judge, as per an order issued by the Union Law Ministry.
