SC Collegium recommends appointment of adv. Hamarsan Singh Thangkhiew as Meghalaya HC judge

The Supreme Court Collegium has recommended the name of Senior Advocate Hamarsan Singh Thangkhiew for appointment as judge of the Meghalaya High Court.

The Collegium comprising Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra and Justices Ranjan Gogoi and Madan B Lokur made the recommendation on September 25.

The Collegium noted that the recommendation was made by the Chief Justice of Meghalaya High Court on February 26, 2018. The government of Meghalaya also conveyed its approval.

In order to ascertain the suitability of Thangkhiew, the Collegium scrutinised the material placed before it and interacted with him.

On the basis of the interaction and having regard to all relevant factors, the Collegium considered it fit to appoint Thangkhiew as judge of the Meghalaya High Court.

“For purpose of assessing merit and suitability of Shri Hamarsan Singh Thangkhiew for elevation to the High Court, we have carefully scrutinized the material placed in the file. Apart from this, we have had interaction with Shri Thangkhiew. On the basis of interaction and having regard to all relevant factors, the Collegium is of the considered view that Shri Hamarsan Singh Thangkhiew, Advocate, is suitable for being appointed as Judge of the Meghalaya High Court. The Collegium, therefore, resolves to recommend that Shri Hamarsan Singh Thangkhiew, Advocate, be appointed as Judge of the Meghalaya High Court.”

Interestingly, the Collegium concurred with the proposal of Calcutta High collegium to not recommend the name of Additional Judge, Justice Amitabha Chatterjee for confirmation as Permanent Judge of that High Court.
