The Collegium of the Supreme Court is meeting again – and 24 Additional judges of different High Courts have been cleared for appointment as permanent judges of the respective High Courts reports Times of India..According to the report, some of the judges who are part of the Collegium were not in Delhi owing to the Dusherra break and Chief Justice HL Dattu contacted them by email and over phone to get their consent..The 24 judges who have now been appointed as permanent judges are those whose appointments were cleared by the respective High Court Collegiums but were subsequently put on hold due to the litigation surrounding the National Judicial Appointments Commission (NJAC)..The NJAC which had replaced the 20 year old Collegium system was struck down by the Supreme Court as unconstitutional on October 16 paving the way for the Collegium to spring back to life..With this fresh round of appointments, Justice Tinlianthang Vaiphei, senior-most judge of Gauhati High Court, will take over as its acting chief justice after the retirement of the present acting Chief Justice, Karanam Sreedhar..The report also states that the Centre has promptly responded to the Collegium’s decision and promised to send the files pertaining to the judges to President Pranab Mukherjee who is currently in Kolkata.
