Chief Justices recommended for High Courts of Manipur Tripura and Meghalaya Orissa and Karnataka to see new Chief Justices

A recent newspaper report has stated that the Supreme Court has recommended the appointment of the Chief Justices of the newly established High Courts at Tripura, Manipur and Meghalaya. Justice T. Meenakumari, of the Patna High Court, shall be the first Chief Justice of Meghalaya. Justice Deepak Gupta, from the High Court of Himachal Pradesh, is being elevated as Chief Justice of Tripura. This would indicate that the Law Ministry has not agreed to Manipur CM’s Okram Ibobi’s representation to have seven judges from Manipur in the High Court..The new High Courts are expected to start functioning from March this year, increasing the total number of High Courts in the country from 21 to 24. Waghela, from the Gujarat High Court, is being appointed the Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court. The last Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court, J. Vikramajit Sen, was recently elevated to the Supreme Court along with two other judges..Another important change is Justice Rajesh Kumar’s transfer from the Allahabad High Court to the Madras High Court, where he shall be the senior-most judge.
