Chief Justices appointed to Five High Courts [Read Notifications]

The Central Government has cleared the appointment of new Chief Justices for five High Courts i.e. the High Courts of Bombay, Calcutta, Uttarakhand, Gauhati and Sikkim.

Pursuant to Collegium recommendations made earlier this month, the Law Ministry has notified that the appointment of the following Chief Justices:

Chief Justice NH Patil for the Bombay High Court

Chief Justice NH Patil obtained his law degree in 1979 from the Bombay University. He dealt with Constitutional, civil and criminal law during his years of legal practice at the Bombay High Court. He has served as an additional standing counsel for the Indian Government and has also appeared for various statutory bodies. He was elevated as a judge of the Bombay High Court in October 2001.

Chief Justice DK Gupta for the Calcutta High Court

Chief Justice Debasish Kar Gupta enrolled as an advocate in 1982. His areas of practice included constitutional, civil, labour and service law. Apart from the Calcutta High Court, he also practiced in the Central and State Administrative Tribunals. He has represented the West Bengal government in various capacities. He was designated a senior advocate in March 2005. In June 2006, he was elevated as a permanent judge of the Calcutta High Court. He has been serving as the Acting Chief Justice of the High Court since September 25 this year.

Chief Justice Ramesh Ranganathan for the Uttarakhand High Court

Chief Justice Ramesh Ranganathan was elevated as an additional judge of the Andhra Pradesh High Court in May 2005. He was appointed a permanent judge in February 2006. He has previously served as the Acting Chief Justice of the Hyderabad High Court from July 30, 2016, to July 6, 2018.

Chief Justice AS Bopanna for the Gauhati High Court

Chief Justice Ajjkuttira Somaiah Bopanna enrolled as an advocate in 1984, following which he dealt with civil, constitutional, company, service and labour matters. He practices in the High Court as well as the civil and labour courts. He has served as an additional standing counsel for the Government between 1999 and 2005. He was appointed an Additional Judge of the Karnataka High Court in 2006. His appointment was made permanent in March 2007.

Chief Justice Vijai Kumar Bist for the Sikkim High Court

Chief Justice VK Bist enrolled with the Uttar Pradesh Bar Council in 1984. He has practiced in the Allahabad High Court as well as the Uttarakhand High Court. He has served as standing counsel for various government entities. He was designated as a senior advocate in 2004. In 2008, he was elevated as judge of the Uttarakhand High Court.
