In the wake of the recent elevations to the Supreme Court, the Central government has notified the appointment of judges as Acting Chief Justices of four different high courts.
Chief Justices of the High Courts of Madras, Orissa and Uttarakhand – Justices Indira Banerjee, Vineet Saran and KM Joseph respectively – were recently elevated to the Supreme Court, thus leaving open the top post of each of these high courts.
Further, the Acting Chief Justice of Bombay High Court, VK Tahilramani was transferred to Madras High Court as Chief Justice.
As a stopgap measure, the Centre has appointed Justice Rajeev Sharma as Acting Chief Justice of the Uttarakhand High Court. Justice Huluvadi G Ramesh has been appointed Acting Chief Justice of the Madras High Court until Justice VK Tahilramani assumes her duties as Chief Justice. Similarly, Justice Indrajit Mahanty has been appointed Acting Chief Justice of the Orissa High Court till Justice KS Jhaveri takes over as Chief Justice.
Justice NH Patil will be the Acting Chief Justice of Bombay High Court.
The transfer of Justices Tahilramani and Jhaveri as Chief Justices of the Madras High Court and the Orissa High Court were recently approved by the Centre.
