Centre initiates appointment of 2000 judges exclusively for Fast Track Courts Subordinate judiciary number to be increased to 20000

As per a report in the Times of India, the Central Government has sanctioned an amount of Rs. 80 crore for the recruitment of 2,000 judges exclusively to be used in various fast track courts across the country. On January 9, 2013 the Central Government wrote to High Courts and State governments to increase the strength of the subordinate judiciary (currently pegged at 18,000) by another 2,000 judges..As per a report in the Times of India, the Central Government has sanctioned an amount of Rs. 80 crore for the recruitment of 2,000 judges exclusively to be used in various fast track courts across the country. On January 9, 2013 the Central Government wrote to High Courts and State governments to increase the strength of the subordinate judiciary (currently pegged at 18,000) by another 2,000 judges..The report also states that money initially earmarked for the setting up of morning and evening courts may now be diverted for the running of these fast track courts. As per the Central Government’s scheme, a total sum of Rs.13.40 lakh was granted per annum for the administration fo each court. This sum may now be utilised for the fast track courts..The setting up of special courts has garnered a lot of support from the judiciary with the Chief Justice of India also indicating his support for such institutions. The Chief Justices of Delhi High Court and Calcutta High Court have also directed that courts be set up for the establishment of fast track courts. The directives of Chief Justice Mishra of the Calcutta High Court also states that these courts will be manned by women officers as far as possible..In addition, the Government of Kerala has given its nod towards the setting up of fast track courts to deal exclusively with offenses related to the exploitation of women and children..As per the most recent numbers released by the Supreme Court, there were more than 2.7 crore cases are pending in the lower judiciary.
