After Justice Ranjan Gogoi took over as the Chief Justice of India, the Central government has been on overdrive in clearing Collegium files relating to appointment and transfer of judges of High Courts..Justice Gogoi took over as the CJI on October 3, 2018. Since then, a total of 121 files relating to appointments and transfer of judges have been cleared. 68 new judges have been appointed to various High Courts while 18 Additional judges have been made permanent. 4 new judges were appointed to the Supreme Court of India. Further, 9 High Courts got new Chief Justices and 6 files relating to Acting Chief Justices were also cleared. 16 Judges of High Courts were transferred from one High Court to another..The transfer of one judge also came with its share of controversy. Justice Akil Kureshi was transferred to Bombay High Court from Gujarat High Court prompting the Gujarat Bar to go on strike. It was their allegation that the transfer was done at the behest of the Executive to prevent Kureshi J from assuming the charge of Acting Chief Justice of Gujarat High Court..The bypassing of Kureshi J by AK Dave J. as Acting Chief Justice even before Kureshi J had assumed charge as judge of Bombay High court lent credence to the allegations.
