The hearing in the Supreme Court today in the petitions filed by ousted CBI Director Alok Verma and NGO Common Cause took an unexpected turn, with the Court adjourning the matter for November 29..Chief Justice of India (CJI) Ranjan Gogoi came down strongly upon Senior Advocate Fali Nariman after documents which the Court had ordered to be submitted in sealed cover were purportedly reported by The Wire..When the matter was taken up today, CJI Gogoi handed over a copy of the report of The Wire to Nariman containing extracts of responses of Alok Verma to CVC. Gogoi J. expressed his displeasure at the same..“As the most respected Senior at the Bar we had given this responsibility to you”, remarked Gogoi J..Nariman said that he is unaware about the same..When Gogoi J. brought up the issue of mentioning by advocate Gopal Sankaranarayanan yesterday seeking more time, Nariman said that the same was unauthorised and he was not informed about it..The Court then deferred the hearing and adjourned the case for November 29 while stating that the matter is being adjourned for “reasons which the Court is not inclined to record”..The Wire has now clarified that their stories were based on Verma’s responses to the questions posed by the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC), and not on the replies submitted to the Supreme Court, which were supposed to be in a sealed cover..Here is the clarification by The Wire on Twitter..Note: The matter was mentioned again by Nariman, who sought time to make some clarifications.
