CBI Court extends judicial custody of P Chidambaram till October 17 in INX Media case

The Special CBI Court at Rouse Avenue Court Complex today extended the judicial custody of P Chidambaram till October 17 in connection with the INX Media case..The order has come days after Delhi High Court refused to grant regular bail to the former Union Minister..Appearing for CBI, Advocate Amit Mahajan moved an application for the extension of Chidambaram’s judicial custody. He informed the Court that Chidambaram’s regular bail plea was dismissed by the High Court earlier this week..Mahajan also stated that Chidambaram had now moved the Supreme Court for relief and the plea was yet to be listed..Senior Advocates Kapil Sibal and Abhishek Manu Singhvi did not oppose the application for extension of judicial custody..Accordingly, the judicial custody of P Chidambaram was extended till October 17..The INX Media case pertains to the alleged irregularities in the Foreign Investment Promotion Board clearance to INX Media at the time when P Chidambaram was the Finance Minister..It is the case of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) that P Chidambaram and his son Karti Chidambaram received illegal gratification from INX Media owners, Peter and Indrani Mukherjea, for the clearance..CBI had arrested P Chidambaram on August 21 after his anticipatory bail plea in the case was rejected by the High Court..He was thereafter sent to CBI custody on August 22 in the case filed by the CBI..Special CBI Judge Ajay Kumar Kuhar later remanded Chidambaram to judicial custody on September 5 after the expiry of the maximum time period for police custody of an accused..Subsequently, his judicial custody was extended by the CBI Court till October 3..P Chidambaram has now moved Supreme Court seeking bail in the case..Read the Order:
