The fire that gutted the Andhra Pradesh High Court [pictured] has resulted in severe damage to the 90 year old heritage building. An Expert Committee of the Government that conducted a detailed assessment of the building has declared a risk of collapse and has said that the building is not fit for use. Justice S.H. Kapadia today recused himself from another matter involving Indian Tobacco Company (ITC) as he held shares in the firm. Lawyers today assembled outside Court Hall 1 of the Karnataka HC, where Justice Dinakaran was presiding, and called out slogans against him. As a result of the charges levelled against him, Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court, Justice P.D. Dinakaran has been ‘delinked’ from elevation to the Supreme Court. CJI K.G. Balakrishnan at the All India conference of the Central Administrative Tribunal told media persons, “We have only asked that the names of four other judges should be processed for their appointment as judges of the Supreme Court,” adding that the Supreme Court Collegium is yet to decide on the fate of Justice Dinakaran.

The Bihar State Human Rights Commission (BSHRC) has asked the Bihar government to suspend 54 public information officers (PIOs) on grounds of “torturing” RTI applicants. The Commission, headed by Justice S.N. Jha, has warned the government that failure to initiate departmental proceedings against these officials would result in a case being filed in the Bihar High Court. The Commission has also asked that false cases lodged against applicants by the PIOs be withdrawn, terming it a “complete violation of human rights”.
