The second hearing of the case between Times Now and its former star anchor and Republic’s Arnab Goswami took place in the Delhi High Court on Friday..BCCL, owner of the Times Now channel, had filed a case against Arnab Goswami’s newly launched Republic TV for alleged theft, infringement of intellectual property and violation of the employment agreement. This, after the latter aired stories regarding former Bihar Chief Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav and Congress MP Shashi Tharoor’s wife Sunanda Pushkar..The plaintiffs, through Senior Advocate Rajiv Nayyar, claimed that Arnab and his team acquired the material for these stories during the course of their employment with Times Now and therefore had no right to use it as the information exclusively belonged to BCCL..The Single Judge Bench of Justice Manmohan had earlier refused to grant any relief to the plaintiffs and had issued notice to Republic TV. He also questioned why the stories were kept in cold storage and not aired by the plaintiffs, especially when they were matters of national interest..Yesterday, Republic TV, through Senior Advocates Sandeep Sethi and Parag Tripathi, supported by law firm Phoenix Legal, submitted that they did not violate the clauses of the employment agreement and had no intention of doing so. They also denied all allegations of intellectual property infringement..Republic TV further submitted that these allegations are leveled against them by Times Now due to fall in their ratings and loss of viewership due to the spectacular launch of Republic TV..The Court ordered for the written statements to be filed. The Court, while restraining the plaintiffs and defendants from the airing the proceedings, did not stop third parties from broadcasting the proceedings of the case..The matter will be next heard on August 31..Arnab and his Republic TV have been at the receiving end of the ire of other media houses since its inception. Recently, TV Today network withdrew its petition against Arnab’s Channel after an assurance was given by Republic TV that it shall only be available on one frequency in a satellite connection..Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, on Friday, also filed a defamation case against Arnab and his channel after the latter broadcasted tapes insinuating foul play in the death of Tharoor’s wife and socialite Sunanda Pushkar who was found dead in her hotel room in January 2014.
