Having received no assurance from the authorities as regards the filling up of vacancies at the Calcutta High Court, lawyers in the city have renewed their boycott of court proceedings for another week..A resolution was passed today by the Bar Association of the Calcutta High Court, calling for advocates to abstain from work from today till March 5. The lawyers have also appealed to Acting Chief Justice Jyotirmay Bhattacharya and other judges of the High Court to refrain from taking up matters during this period..Last Monday, the High Court Bar Association and other lawyers’ bodies had resolved to abstain from work for a week calling for the vacancies at the High Court to be filled. However, it seems that little has been done to address their demands..The High Court is currently functioning at around 40% of its sanctioned strength of 72 judges. The retirement of three judges this month – Justices Siddhartha Chattopadhyay, Mir Dara Sheko and Debi Prosad Dey – has brought the working strength to 30 judges, two of whom sit at the High Court’s Circuit Bench at Port Blair..On Friday, a delegation of lawyers had met Governor of West Bengal KN Tripathi, who revealed that he had discussed the issue with various authorities, and would take up the matter with Chief Justice of India, Dipak Misra..A copy of today’s resolution has also been sent to the CJI, President of India, the Prime Minister, the Union Law Minister, the Chief Minister of the state and the Acting Chief Justice and other judges of the High Court, among others..Protests over growing vacancies at high courts has become something of an epidemic in the last couple of months, with lawyers at Karnataka, Odisha and Calcutta having to resort to court boycotts to draw the attention of the authorities to the issue..Read the resolution:.HT to @SanjayM73565536
