There was only one nomination each for the post of both President and Vice-President of Bombay Bar Association. Four nominations were received for the office of Honorary Secretary including M.P. Rao, Sashikumar Nair, Armin Wandrewalla and Anita Shekar Castellino. Elections are being held for the post of Honorary Secretary and Standing Committee Members (20 Members). 39 people are contesting in the elections to get themselves elected in the standing committee. The voting will be by secret ballot and it has already started at 10:00 AM and will last till 5:00 PM. The results will be announced by 9:30 PM today itself..Speaking to Bar & Bench Solicitor Fanibanda Aspi, one of the contestants, said: “My aim is to bring more transparency and to resolve problems faced by junior advocates. We need to ensure smooth functioning of the bar and also there should be good interactions between the judges and people at the Bar”..The Bombay Bar Association, established in 1862, is one of the oldest in the country. It is an association of lawyers practicing on the Original Side of the Bombay High Court. The Bar Association has given the Country many Chief Justices, Judges of the Supreme Court and Bombay High Court, Attorney-Generals, Solicitor-Generals and Advocate-Generals of the State. Mohammad Ali Jinnah, Ram Jethmalani, F.S. Nariman, S.J. Sorabjee, Chief Justice M H Kania, Justice SN Variava, and present Chief Justice S.H. Kapadia were few among the erstwhile members of this Association..Though the Association is unregistered it has rules governing elections, conduct, membership etc. Membership is open to all those who practice or intend to practice on the Original Side. At first applicants are admitted as temporary members. Only after completing one year, an applicant is made a permanent member. There are certain privileges like the right to vote and stand for election to the Standing Committee which are available only to the permanent members.
