Bilkis Bano, who was gang-raped during the 2002 Gujarat Riots, has turned down the compensation amount of Rs. 5 lakh offered by the State of Gujarat..The Court was hearing a plea by Bano seeking enhanced compensation..When the matter came up for hearing today, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta told the Court that the State has sanctioned a compensation amount of Rs. 5 lakh for Bano and the same will be paid soon..Mehta also informed the court that action against erring officials would be completed within two weeks..Bano’s counsel, however, pointed out that the police officials who botched up the investigation into the matter have not yet been punished despite conviction by Bombay High Court and the same being upheld by Supreme Court. Referring to one of the officers, she said that he is due to retire in June 2019..She, therefore, submitted that the matter should be listed early. The CJI then said: “If you don’t want to take the compensation, don’t take it.”.He then allowed the request for an early listing.
