BCI Member Rajendra Singh Rana arrested for bribe, while mob snatches CBIs bribe catch

Following arrests of a Bar Council of India (BCI) Member Rajendra Singh Rana, on charges of bribery and issuing false certification on behalf of the BCI to a Ghaziabad Law College whose Advisory Board Member Manish Tyagi was also arrested alongside on Monday night, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) was also attacked by a mob during an ongoing raid at Rana’s residence..The Bar Council of India has laid down that a law college to impart legal education, has to obtain a certification from the BCI authorities..Speaking with Bar & Bench, Dr. Shashikala Gurpur, Principal of Symbiosis Law School (Pune) said,.“It is very sad that an educational institution has been forced to bribe somebody, subject to confirmation. The alleged action is deplorable, as far as legal education is concerned which should be primarily aiming at ethics both in action and in letter and spirit and the Bar Council being the regulatory body should have fixed standards, rather than high standards to have this kind of indulgence in wrong practices, if it is true and we wish that regulation in legal education will soon be on the anvil whether within the Bar Council prerogative or outside the Bar Council prerogative, we only hope for that”..Speaking with Peniwal, former Vice Chairman Bar Council of India on the scenario, he said,.“I left the Bar Council of India a year ago, and I feel the Bar Council of India members should be honest in every aspect in relation to law i.e. the Bar and the Bench so that people have high respect of the institution”..History: The CBI on Monday arrested BCI Member of the Legal Education Committee, Rajendra Singh Rana on charges of demanding bribe, from law schools in India. The CBI Agency has registered a case with the Delhi Police that a mob of around 40 people stormed into BCI Member, Rana’s North-Delhi house around 10pm, while an eight member team was at work, beat up an inspector and fled with incriminating documents and about Rs. 6.8 lakh in bribe money, reports the Telegraph..According to media reports, yesterday a special CBI Court in Patiala House allowed custodial interrogation of the accused i.e. Rana (for taking the bribe in exchange for BCI Certification) and Manish Tyagi (for giving bribe in exchange for approval from the BCI) for two days..When the CBI informed that it has seized over Rs. 1 lakh from Rana’s residence, searches were carried out at seven places in and around Delhi, including the law college. The CBI conducted searches at the office and residence of R. Dhanapal Raj, Vice Chairman of the Bar Council of India, and seized cash amounting to several lakhs of rupees, sources in the agency told the Hindu..The CBI has filed a complaint against three advocates (part of the mob), and their accomplices for assaulting government servants and preventing them from discharging their duty. Lawyers today, in Delhi have abstained from work in Delhi’s District Courts for reasons of CBI not having women officials present at the time of arresting of BCI member Rana, who was allegedly caught accepting a bribe for granting affiliation to a private law college.
