Attacks on Kashmiris: SC says no further directions needed in light of no violent incidents

The Supreme Court today noted that no further directions need to be passed in the case concerning apprehensions of attacks on Kashmiris in the aftermath of the Pulwama terror attacks..The Bench of Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi with Justices L Nageswara Rao and Sanjiv Khanna asked Senior Counsel Colin Gonsalves as to what additional orders could be passed by the Court..Gonsalves told the Court that the petitioner was seeking steps like setting up of a helpline as well as facilitation of online registration of FIRs..The Centre, through Attorney General KK Venugopal, apprised the Court that no violent incidents have taken place since the Court’s last order..Taking Centre’s submission on record and after having heard Gonsalves, the Court concluded that no additional directions need to be passed in the case at the moment. The Court has directed the States to file their replies within seven days and listed the case for hearing after seven days..Last week, the Court had issued notice to ten states in the petition to protect Kashmiris from violence following the Pulwama terror attack. The petition was filed by a practicing lawyer, Tariq Adeeb..The petitioner had prayed that steps to be taken to prevent such attacks, threats, and social boycott against Kashmiris. Further, the petition also sought for the appointment of a Nodal officer in sensitive districts to prevent acts of violence against Kashmiris and to ensure the prosecution of offenders.
