Armed Forces Tribunal might just get 3 new members and former Jharkhand HC CJ could be Chairperson..The Centre told the Supreme Court today that the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has cleared the appointment of three retired judges as judicial members of Armed forces Tribunal..The three retired judges are Justice VK Shali, Babu Mathew P Joseph, and Karam Chand Puri..The government, represented by Solicitor General Ranjit Kumar also told the court that another 4 names are “under process”..Besides these, the Centre has also received 5 more names from the Committee headed by Justice JS Khehar..The Solicitor General also submitted that a former Chief Justice of Jharkhand High Court is being considered for appointment as Chairperson..The appointments have been cleared at a time when the Supreme Court had taken suo-moto cognisance of the vacancies in AFT. This itself came after a symbolic protest held by Armed Forces Tribunal (Principal Bench) Bar Association on September 22 along with a letter written to the Chief Justice of India concerning non-appointment of judicial members in AFTs..The letter had highlighted the poor state of affairs at the tribunal; for instance only five benches out of a possible seventeen were functioning in the country..The Court recorded the submissions made by Centre and adjourned the matter..Read the information note regarding the appointments below.
