Students of Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law (RGNUL), Patiala, are protesting in response to the Vice-Chancellor's visit to the girls' hostel without consent or prior notice and inappropriate comments made on the clothing of female students.
A video circulating on social media shows that Vice Chancellor Singh made a surprise visit inside the girls' hostel premises. In the video, Singh is seen inspecting the rooms of the female inmates. When the inmates object, he is seen assuring the female students that he is not conducting the inspection alone but is accompanied by a female warden.
The protest from students centers around the Singh's presence in the hostel, raising concerns since university rules do not permit even parents to enter the hostel.
The student representation has condemned the non-consensual surprise visit of their VC. They have alleged the visit of Singh in violation of privacy of the female students and have stated that a male cannot be allowed to enter rooms of female students irrespective of female faculty members/guards accompanying them.
Bar & Bench reached out to Prof Singh, who explained that complaints by some female hostel inmates about the quality of mess food and other hostel amenities prompted his visit. He added that the hostel's warden accompanied him during his inspection.
