The Tamil Nadu National Law University (TNNLU), Tiruchirappalli is organizing the 2nd All India Legal History Congress (AILHC) on May 21st and 22nd, 2021 . This Legal History Congress is being organized with the generous financial support of the Government of Tamil Nadu.

We hope that this Congress will provide an opportunity for everyone interested in various facets of legal history whether they are legal historians, historians from other fields, academicians from the social science disciplines, judges, advocates, research scholars and students across the country to present papers on the subthemes indicated at the end, in order to enhance our knowledge of the Legal History of India and other parts of the world.

The theme for this year is “Pursuit of Legal History of India in the 21st Century”. There will be 8 Sections divided on the basis of chronology and interested persons are invited to submit their abstracts on the sub-themes, enumerated at the end, according to the time period of the interest.

About the Organiser

TNNLU is located in Srirangam Taluk of the Tiruchirappalli Corporation, formerly known as Trichinopoly. This institution of learning was established by the Government of Tamil Nadu by an Act of State Legislature (Act No. 9 of 2012) to provide quality legal education.

· Local governments and administration of justice in pre colonial times

· Court procedures under imperial Cholas

· Judicial institutions during the medieval period

· Legal system of South Indian kingdoms in medieval period

· Need for an understanding of the past in judicial practice

· Caste and gender in the practice of law in pre colonial history

· The East India Company Courts in India

· Rule of law and constitutional developments

· Khap Panchayats and administration of justice

· Framing of Indian Constitution and Legal system in India

· Sexual assault as seen through the brahmanical texts

· Development of the laws relating to rape in Colonial Times

· Judicial reforms vis-à-vis the British administration in India

· Impact of Portuguese Judicial System in the Indian Sub-Continent

· Legal Education & Legal Profession before and after the Independence of India

· Women's Rights and legal reforms

· States Reorganization and Official Language Policy

· Growth of legal system in South East Asian Countries

· Roman Law and its impact on other continents

· Anglo-Saxon Jurisprudence

· Napoleonic Code and its relation to India

· Contemporary Challenges in Legal History

· History of the various legislations in India since the Colonial days

· Social reform legislations during the British rule of the subcontinent

The above sub themes are only illustrative and the participants are free to write on any topic directly connected to the central theme of the Congress

Paper Guidelines

i. Abstract: Not exceeding 300 words

ii. Keywords (Maximum of 5)

iii. Full Research Paper: 4000-4500 words

iv. Font style & Size: Times New Roman & 12

v. Line spacing: Double & justified alignment

vi. Endnotes: Times New Roman (size 10), Endnotes style: MLA style 8th Edition

vii. Soft copy of Abstract along with a covering letter should reach to ailhc2021@tnnlu.ac.in on or before 13th March 2021

viii. Abstract submitted by the registered participants only will be shortlisted for the online presentation

ix. Editorial Board will reserve the right to reject or edit any paper

x. Selected papers will be published in the Legal History Journal

xi. There will be cash awards for two of the best research papers one in each category:

a. Best research paper by a faculty member or other scholars

b. Best research paper by a student

Important Dates

· Submission of Abstract on or before – 13th March 2021

· Selected abstracts will be intimated by the Editorial Board on 20th March 2021

· Submission of full Research Paper on or before – 1st May 2021

· Registration opens – 1st March 2021

· Last Date for Registration – 29th March 2021

· The foreign delegates are advised to submit their abstracts on or before 13th March 2021 and the full paper before 1st May along with their bio-data after visiting the website of the Ministry of External Affairs, as it has been made mandatory by the Government of India. www.mea.gov.in

Registration Fee

· For the Indian delegates: Registration will be Rs. 500/- & Rs. 300/- for the scholars & students respectively. Every additional co-author has to pay Rs. 500/- each, in case of students Rs. 300/- each. (Maximum of 3 authors are permitted)

· Participants from SAARC Countries, Africa & Latin American Countries – USD · 25. Every additional co-author has to pay USD 25 each.

· Participants from other Countries - USD 50. Every additional co-author has to pay USD 50 each.
