MNLU Mumbai launches Centre for Research in Criminal Justice

The Maharashtra National Law University, Mumbai (MNLU Mumbai) inaugurated its Centre for Research in Criminal Justice (CRCJ) yesterday.

The CRCJ intends to provide significant advancements in the field of research in criminal justice administration and further seeks to demonstrate a quality contribution towards the same.

Present at the occasion were Justices NH Patil and AS Oka of the Bombay High Court, and other members of the Bar.

Speaking at the occasion, Justice Oka emphasized on the objective behind establishing NLUs across India and the role of CRCJ in attaining its goal.

Justice Patil spoke at length on the lack of proper investigation procedure in criminal investigations in India and its adverse impact on the criminal justice administration. He laid emphasis on the need to have a proper scientific investigation mechanism in place to deal with the prosecution of criminal cases effectively.

Milind Sathe, President of the Bombay Bar Association, highlighted the journey of criminal justice administration in India from 1773, citing several landmark judgments, and emphasized on the synergy between technology and the criminal justice system.

Advocate General for Maharashtra Ashutosh Kumbhakoni spoke on the role the society plays as the primary stakeholder in the administration of criminal justice.

Vice Chancellor of MNLU Mumbai Prof BP Panda also addressed the gathering by highlighting the role of the CJRJ in doing research on the criminal justice administration.

The session concluded with a vote of thanks by the Registrar Sadashiv S Deshmukh, followed by a roundtable discussion on challenges to the criminal justice administration in Maharashtra.
