Maharashtra’s law CET: The counselling, admission process demystified

Ever since the Bombay High Court dismissed the challenge to the law CET, there have been a number of questions regarding the counselling and admission process..To address some of the common queries, Bar & Bench reader Aditya Roongta has prepared a short primer on the CET counselling process, and what you can expect in the coming weeks..1. What next?.On June 30, the Department of Higher Education (DHE) published a flowchart [pdf] to explain the coming sequence of events. Step one will be the registration of colleges, where the colleges will have to provide details on sanctioned intake and the type of institution (minority/non-minority). These details will then be verified and approved; the entire process is expected to take 7-10 days..2. What should I do now?.Wait..After the registration process is completed, the Centralised Admission Process (CAP) begins. You will be required to provide details such as name, address, marks etc. This will start around July 15 according to this Times of India report. You’ll have to take a print of the form and submit it at a Facilitation Centre along with other documents like mark sheets and certificates..3. The CAP process.After the last date of filling CAP form, the DHE will publish a merit list category wise (Open, minority etc) and a list of seats available for each category..You’ll have to submit a list of your preferred colleges in which you desire admission..Round I of admissions will begin. You’ll have an option to “Freeze”, i.e. confirm or “Float”, i.e. you confirm but wish to upgrade from your allotted college. You’ll have to take provisional admission in either case by paying a fees of Rs. 3,000 for Open category and Rs. 1,000 for others at the Admission Reporting Centre. If you don’t do that, you’ll be out of the process..For people who “Float”, there will be a Round II and III..There will then be a final Round IV of admissions where the DHE will display a list of seats that are still available. Anyone can participate in this round, even those who have “Frozen” their admissions. The institute allotted in this round will be final..4. What are the tie-breaking rules?.If there are multiple applications with the same CET score, ranking would be decided as follows (source):.5. How do I find out my rank?.Your final rank in the merit list will be generated after people have filled the CAP form. (Please note that there may be discrepancies in this data).A minimum score of 50 for Open category and 40 for Other categories is required to be eligible for admissions..6. What will be the cutoff for GLC/ILS?.This is very difficult to ascertain..Both these institutes together have around 200 seats (Open Category) for 3 year LLB and another around 200 seats (Open Category) for 5 year LLB.
