A first-year law student of ICFAI Hyderabad was subject to intense ragging in the form of physical and verbal abuse by his seniors for allegedly making social media comments on a religious figure.

A video of the student being beaten ruthlessly in his hostel room went viral ten days after the incident took place in the University. The video shows the victim being slapped and attacked on his private parts. It is also alleged that the victim was forced by the seniors to chant religious slogans.

“We want to fix this n*****'s ideology. We will beat him into a coma and he will remember a whole new world,” one of the perpetrators is seen saying in the video.

The victim is also heard chanting "Jai Mata Di" and "Allahu Akbar" slogans, as the seniors continue beating him.

Eight accused students have been taken into custody and charged for criminal intimidation, assault and attempt to murder under the Indian Penal Code as well as provisions of the Telangana Prohibition of Ragging Act, 1997. The University has suspended twelve students following the incident.

According to reports, the University Registrar, members of the anti-ragging committee and the hostel wardens were questioned by the police. The police have also ruled out any communal or regional angle to the incident.

Attempts to reach out to the University for its stance on the matter and the preventive measures it intends to take to curb similar incidents in the future have been met with no response so far.
