Prof (Dr) MK Ramesh has been given the charge of Full-time Additional Vice-Chancellor of the National Law School of India (NLSIU), Bangalore. Prof Ramesh will be in charge until the appointment of the successor of Prof (Dr) R Venkat Rao, whose term as Vice Chancellor is at an end.
Prof MK Ramesh is an alumnus of the University of Mysore, from where he also obtained his PhD. He has around four decades of teaching experience. He has previously taught in various institutions including Hombe Gowda Law College, Mandya; Vidyavardhaka Law College, Mysore; and University Law College, Dharwad. Between 1988 and 1992, he also served as an assistant Commercial Tax Officer to the Government of Karnataka, before returning to academia.
In 1992, he joined NLSIU as an Assistant Professor of Law (Senior). In 2006, he was designated a Professor of Law at the University.
He was a Senior Fulbright Fellow in the US during 2005-06. In 2010 and 2011, he was a visiting professor at KTH, Stockholm. In 2010, he also had a stint as Law Faculty at Zurich.
His areas of specialization include International Law, Environmental Law and Human Rights Law. He has published over 30 articles and contributed chapters to five books.
A few names proposed to take up the post of NLSIU Vice Chancellor were rejected during an Executive Committee meeting held earlier this month. The search for the NLSIU VC was chaired by former NUJS Director MP Singh, Attorney General KK Venugopal and Senior Advocate Arvind Datar.
It is understood that former NLSIU student and faculty at Azim Premji University Sudhir Krishnaswamy and Symbiosis Law School Director Dr. Shashikala Gurpur were amongst the candidates who had applied for the post of Vice-Chancellor. With the conduct of a fresh search, new names are likely to be considered.
