A team from the National Law Institute University, Bhopal (NLIU) has won the Ian Fletcher International Insolvency Law Moot Court Competition held at the Singapore Management University, School of Law.

The team comprising Aishwarya Srivastava, Udyan Arya Shrivastava, and Christina Shaju from the fifth year and Kuhoo Mishra from the third year, becomes the first Indian team to have won this competition. Kuhoo Mishra, adjudged as the Best Mooter, stands selected to observe United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL) proceedings in New York or Vienna.

The Moot Court Competition held between March 29 and 31 was organised by INSOL International, in collaboration with UNCITRAL and International International Insolvency Institute and supported by University of Queensland, Australia.

The final round of the moot took place before a panel of eminent international Judges including Justice (retd.) AK Sikri from the Supreme Court India. Other Judges on the panel were Justice Steven Chong from the Court of Appeal of Singapore, and Chief Justice Cecilia Morris of the Southern District of New York, USA

The NLIU team qualified for the World Finals through a written submission round in December. In Singapore, there were 3 preliminary rounds followed by Quarter Finals, Semi Finals, and Finals.

The moot problem was based on the UNCITRAL Model Law on Cross Border Insolvency and set in the fictional state of Zeeland, with cross-border elements from two other fictional states, Yin and Xylia.

Other teams that participated in the competition included teams from National University of Singapore (NUS), Singapore Management University (SMU), Leiden University, Netherlands, University of British Columbia, Canada, and Queensland University of Technology, Australia among others.
