Prof (Dr) NK Chakrabarti has been appointed the new Vice Chancellor of the National University of Juridical Sciences (NUJS), Kolkata.
Speaking to Bar & Bench, Prof Chakrabarti said that the Chancellor has intimated that his appointment as the next NUJS Vice Chancellor has been confirmed. Prof Chakrabarti commented that he was honoured to be appointed to the office. He said,
“I am honoured to join [as the Vice Chancellor of NUJS] because it is one of the top law schools in the country.”
Prof Chakrabarti also confirmed that he is the first Bengali to be appointed as the Vice Chancellor of NUJS.
Prof Chakrabarti is an alumnus of the Calcutta University, from where he obtained his BA (English and Political Sciences), LLB, MA (Political Science) and LLM degrees.
In 1985, he joined the West Bengal Education Service as an Assistant Professor of Law. He taught at the Hoogly Mohsin College from July, 1985 until 1996. In 1992, he obtained his PhD qualification from the University of Burdwan on Criminal Justice/Penology.
He then joined the Calcutta University’s Faculty of Law where he was appointed a Senior Lecturer, and then a Reader. In January 2007, he was promoted to Professor. In 2009, he took charge as the Director of KIIT Law School in Bhubaneshwar.
He has published 7 books, over 50 research papers and presented papers in World Criminology Congress, the Congress at Seoul etc. In 2011, he participated in the American Correctional Association Congress at Florida. He is also associated with various research projects.
Prof Chakrabarti will be taking over from Acting Vice Chancellor, former High Court justice Amit Talukdar. The post of Vice Chancellor at NUJS has been lying vacant for over a year now.
The last permanent Vice Chancellor of NUJS, Prof Iswara Bhatt had resigned in March last year amidst student outcry following the release of a Review Commission report which had acknowledged lapses in the administration of the University.
