The working strength of the Supreme Court rose to 33 on Tuesday as nine new judges were sworn in.
With this the vacancies in the top court came down from 10 to 1. The sanctioned strength of the Supreme Court in 34.
Chief Justice of India NV Ramana administered oath of office to the nine new judges - Justices Abhay Shreeniwas Oka, Vikram Nath, Jitendra Kumar Maheshwari, Hima Kohli, BV Nagarathna, CT Ravikumar, MM Sundresh, Bela Trivedi and PS Narsimha.
This was the first time in its 70-year history that nine judges were taking oath of office in one go.
The names of the nine judges were recommended for elevation to Supreme Court by the collegium on August 17 and were subsequently approved by the Central government on August 26.
