Delhi Riots: Former Delhi HC Judge, Justice Sunil Gaur appointed as Claims Commissioner

The Delhi Government has approved the appointment of former Delhi High Court Judge, Justice (retd) Sunil Gaur as 'Claims Commissioner' for the riots that broke out in the city's North-East area earlier this year.

Last month, the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court, Justice DN Patel, had named Justice Gaur as the Claims Commissioner in terms of the law laid down by the Supreme Court in the case of Destruction of Public and Private Property vs State of Andhra Pradesh.

As per the Delhi Government Order, the term of Justice Gaur as Claims Commisisoner shall be for a period of six months, subject to extensions, if required.

Justice Gaur shall be entitled to the following facilities during his term:

- Emoluments, allowances and facilities, including a chauffer driven vehicle, secretarial assistance etc equivalent to that of a sitting judge of the High Court of Delhi.

-Requisite office with sufficient staff.

- Appropriate security considering the sensitive nature of the subject matter.

- Any other requirement as may be determined by the Claims Commissioner himself to enable him to smoothly perform the task assigned.

Justice Gaur had retired from the office of the judge of Delhi High Court in August last year, days after he denied anticipatory bail to former Union Minister, P Chidambaram in the INX Media case.
