The Central government has decided to repeal the three controversial Farm Laws against which farmers from Punjab, Haryana and Western Uttar Pradesh have been protesting for more than a year.

The decision to withdrawn the contentions farm laws was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the occasion of Parkash Purab of Sri Guru Nanak Dev.

The Prime Minister said that Central government has decided to repeal the three Farm Laws and procedure for the same has already been set in motion.

The procedure will be completed in the winter session of the parliament starting at the end of this month, he added.

The Prime Minister maintained that his government has always worked for the benefit of farmers, particularly small farmers and will continue the same.

The three laws, Farmers (Empowerment & Protection) Agreement of Price Assurance & Farm Services Act 2020, Farmers Produce Trade & Commerce (Promotion & Facilitation) Act & Amendment to Essential Commodities Act have also been challenged before the Supreme Court.

The Supreme Court had on January 12, 2021, stayed the implementation of Farm Laws.

The Court had also ordered the formation of a committee to hear all the parties and stakeholders and submit a report to the Court about the same.

The Committee had, subsequently, submitted its report to the top court in March.

Besides petitions challenging the laws, there are also many petitions before the Supreme Court against the farmers blockading roads outside Delhi.

These petitions have been filed by citizens whose commute to national capital was affected due to the road blockade.
