Former Supreme Court judge, Justice (Retired) KS Radhakrishnan has been appointed a member of the Commonwealth Secretariat Arbitral Tribunal, London. He has been appointed to serve as a member of the Tribunal for a four-year term between June 1, 2019, and May 31, 2023.
Justice KS Radhakrishnan served as a judge of the Supreme Court between November 2009 and May 2014. Prior to this, he served as the Chief Justice of the Gujarat and Jammu and Kashmir High Courts.
He originally hails from Kerala, where he enrolled as an advocate in 1983. During his years of legal practice, he appeared before the Kerala High Court and subordinate courts in Kerala. He has appeared as standing counsel for entities such as the Cochin University of Science and Technology, State Bank of India, State Bank of Travancore, Kerala State Cooperative Rubber Marketing Federation and State Trading Corporation of India.
Among the notable cases dealt with by Justice Radhakrishnan during his tenure at the Supreme Court are the SEBI v Sahara case and the 2014 Jallikattu ruling. Before retiring from the top Court, Justice Radhakrishnan was also part of the two-judge Bench which decided the NALSA case, ruling that transgender persons should be recognized as a third gender entitled to the same Constitutional rights as any other person.
Post his retirement, some controversy was raised after the People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) named Justice KS Radhakrishnan as “Man of the Year” in view of his Jallikattu ruling. The PETA award prompted the Madras High Court to issue notice in a petition praying that the former judge be directed to return the same, as it denoted evidence of bias in favour of PETA. The Supreme Court, however, halted the proceedings before the Madras High Court shortly thereafter.
