Former Supreme Court judge Justice Kuldip Singh, often referred to as the 'Green Judge', passed away on November 25 (Monday) at the age of 92 years.

Justice Singh, born on January 1, 1932, earned his BA LLB from Punjab University in 1955. He completed his LLB as an internal student at the University of London in 1958. He was called to the Bar at Lincoln’s Inn in November 1959 and enrolled as an advocate in the Punjab High Court the same year.

He served as a part-time lecturer at Punjab University Law College (1960–1971) and held various key positions, including Senior Standing Counsel for the Central Government (1971–1982), Advocate General of Punjab (May–August 1987), and Additional Solicitor General of India (from August 1987). He was also President of the Punjab and Haryana High Court Bar Association (1976–77).

Known for his expertise in constitutional, service, cooperative, and election laws, as well as land acquisition and criminal matters, he represented prominent universities, corporations, and institutions during his years of legal practice.

Justice Singh was appointed to the Supreme Court of India on December 14, 1988, and retired on December 21, 1996.

Known for having rendered court rulings to protect the environment, he earned the moniker, the “Green Judge.”

He will be cremated today in Chandigarh at 3PM.
