Despite Supreme Court order, Delhi High Court Bar Association rejects reservation for women lawyers

Bar & Bench

The Delhi High Court Bar Association (DHCBA) general body has rejected the adoption of resolutions favouring reservation of posts for women in its Executive Committee.

The meeting of the bar body to vote on the same - helmed by its President and Senior Advocate Mohit Mathur and its Secretary Sandeep Sharma - was conducted on Monday.

As the resolutions were put forth for voice vote, the largely male turnout aggressively voiced their opposition to the move, drowning out the voices of protesting women lawyers.

Sharma then conveyed the decision of the DHCBA, saying,

"We are against any kind of reservation for any seat."

The development assumes significance given that the Supreme Court had recently urged the Association to reserve at least 4 out of 10 such posts for women, including the post of Treasurer.

The top court is set to hear the matter again on October 16.

The Supreme Court is seized of two petitions, one seeking directions to all district bar associations in the national capital to implement 33 per cent reservation for women in all Bar elections, and another seeking reservation for women in the DHCBA.

Elections for the Bar Council of Delhi and all the bar associations in the national capital are scheduled to be held on October 19 this year.
