The list of winners of the Delhi Bar Council elections is out, with Advocate Ajayinder Sangwan taking pole position with more than one thousand votes.

In the list of 25 lawyers who have been elected, Sangwan is followed by Advocates Murari Tiwari, Rajiv Khosla and Nitin Ahlawat. Tiwari and Ahlawat have, in the past, held the post of Honorary Secretary of the Delhi Bar Council.

Former Chairman of the Delhi Bar Council KK Manan secured the tenth position, while Luthra and Luthra Senior Partner Vijay Kumar Sondhi finished at the twentieth position. Advocate Manoj Kumar Singh, Founding Partner of Singh and Associates, grabbed the twenty first position.

Speaking to Bar and Bench, Advocate Ajayinder Sangwan thanked the entire legal fraternity for its support. He described two reasons behind his success in the elections, namely his agenda, and the fact that they were able to restore democracy with regard to the process.

He stated that his campaign was based on the welfare of advocates and highlighted his promises, which include a certain fixed stipend for young lawyers, pension for senior lawyers, housing and insurance for advocates etc.

In the press release issued by Singh and Associates, it is stated that,

“Mr. Manoj K Singh contested this BCD Election with the sole aim to win the opportunity to give back to the profession. Firmly believing in the motto – together we will work for a better future, Mr Singh is determined on bringing phenomenal change in the legal profession and work towards his agendas i.e. minimum compensation for lawyers, better infrastructure for law colleges, transparency in administration of welfare fund and rendering opportunity for law firm partners to apply for senior advocate designation.”

The Delhi Bar Council elections were held on March 16 and 17 at the High Court of Delhi, where approximately 30,000 lawyers voted for their favorite candidate. Around 185 lawyers threw their hat into the election to the Council.

The elections also came under the spotlight due to the massive defacement of property which took place during the campaigning, as well as on the election days. Commuters in the capital had to face severe inconvenience due to extreme congestion near the High Court.
