Constitution Day celebrations: Multilingual Supreme Court app, AI software to be launched

In a press release, the Supreme Court has announced that a programme to mark the celebration of Constitution Day will be held today.

At the event, the Indian Judiciary: Annual Report 2018-2019 will be presented to President of India Ram Nath Kovind. In this regard, the release reads,

“On this occasion ‘Indian Judiciary: Annual Report 20182019’ will be presented to Hon’ble the President of India. The Annual Report published by Supreme Court of India showcases the initiatives and achievements of the entire Indian Judiciary, including Supreme Court of India and 25 High Courts with Subordinate Courts under their jurisdiction, on one platform for information and reference.”

Additionally, an official multilingual mobile app of Supreme Court, which was developed with the technical consultation of the National Informatics Centre, will also be launched. The app will provide “authentic real time” access and updates with regard to Case Status, Display Board, Daily Orders, Judgments, Office Reports, Circulars and other useful information for Lawyers, Litigants. The app will be made available for download from the official website of the Supreme Court. It will be available in English, Hindi and six other regional languages.

The release also states that the ‘Supreme Court Vidhik Anuvaad Software’ (SUVAS) will be presented to the President of India.

“SUVAS is a machine assisted translation tool trained by Artificial Intelligence. This Tool is especially designed for Judicial Domain and at present, has the capacity and capability of translating English Judicial documents, Orders or Judgments into nine vernacular languages scripts and vice versa.”

The launch of SUVAS will mark the first step of introducing and employing Artificial Intelligence in the judicial system.

Apart from President Kovind, the guests for the Constitution Day celebrations include Chief Justice of India Sharad Arvind Bobde and Union Minister for Law & Justice and Electronics & Information Technology, Ravi Shankar Prasad.

Attorney General for India KK Venugopal, the Supreme Court’s Justices NV Ramana and Arun Mishra, and President of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) Rakesh Khanna will also be present along with other judges of the Supreme Court and office bearers of the SCBA and SCAORA.

November 26 is celebrated as the country’s Constitution Day every year. It was on this day in 1949 that the Constituent Assembly of India formally adopted the Constitution of India, which subsequently came into effect on January 26, 1950.
