CJI nominates Justice Surya Kant as Chairperson of Supreme Court Legal Services Committee

A notification intimating the development was issued on November 12.

Supreme Court judge Justice Surya Kant has been nominated as the chairperson of the Supreme Court legal Services Committee.

A notification intimating the development was issued on November 12.

Justice Kant was nominated to the post by Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna in exercise of the powers conferred by Section 3A of the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987.

Legal services authorities are tasked with providing legal aid and assistance to the weak and marginalised sections of society.

The post was earlier held by the Supreme Court's senior most puisne judge, Justice BR Gavai.

Justice Gavai was recently appointed Executive Chairperson of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA).
