The Central Government on Saturday notified the elevation of three judicial officers as judges of the Madras High Court.

Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal announced the same on social media platform X.

The three judicial officers are:

- R Poornima;

- M Jothiraman; and

- Augustine Devadoss Maria Clete.

The Supreme Court Collegium had recommended their names for elevation on September 10.

As per the Collegium's resolution, a Supreme Court judge familiar with the affairs of the Madras High Court was consulted to assess the fitness and suitability of the candidates.

Notably, the resolution said that the elevation of Augustine Devadoss Maria Clete would enhance the representation of minorities on the Bench of the High Court.

The Collegium also explained why some other senior judicial officers were not considered for elevation.

"While considering the above proposal, we have also taken note of the fact that the above proposal involves non-recommendation of some senior judicial officers. Cogent reasons have been recorded by the Collegium of the High Court for not recommending their names. We are, therefore, in agreement with the High Court Collegium for overlooking them," the resolution said.

As on September 1, the Madras High Court was functioning with 62 judges against a sanctioned strength of 75, leaving 13 vacancies.
