Breaking: NLSIU Alum Prof. Sudhir Krishnaswamy appointed Vice Chancellor of NLSIU

Professor Sudhir Krishnaswamy has been appointed Vice-Chancellor of National Law School of India University, Bangalore.

The decision was taken by the Executive Council of NLSIU pursuant to the recommendation made by a Committee constituted for this purpose. The Committee was headed by Supreme Court judge, Justice SA Bobde. The Committee also included sitting Supreme Court Judge, Justice Mohan M Shantanagoudar, retired Supreme Court judge, Justice V Gopala Gowda and Professor (Dr.) VS Elizabeth.

Chairperson of Bar Council of India, Manan Kumar Mishra, who was also part of the Committee had sent a letter communication to the Committee and he was excused from the meeting.

The Committee was formed by an order dated July 10, 2019 passed pursuant to a resolution of the Executive Council of the NLSIU.

The Committee had met at the Supreme Court on July 23 and interacted with the following three shortlisted candidates:

  1. Professor Sudhir Krishnaswamy
  2. Professor Sashikala Gurpur
  3. Professor Srikrishna Deva Rao

After interaction with the above candidates, the Committee recommended the name of Professor Sudhir Krishnaswamy for the post. The Executive Council of NLSIU has approved this decision.

Interestingly, Sudhir Krishnaswamy is an alumnus of NLSIU, Bangalore having graduated in BA LLB from the University in 1998. He has been a Teaching Fellow in Law at the Pembroke College at Oxford University, an Assistant Professor at NLSIU and a Professor at the West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences, Kolkata.

He is a co-founder of the Centre for Law & Policy Research  (CLPR).

Sudhir has also worked in the Prime Minister’s Committee on Infrastructure and the Kasturirangan Committee on Governance of Bangalore. He has authored a book titled ‘Democracy and Constitutionalism in India’ which was published by the Oxford University Press in 2009.

Earlier, Prof (Dr) MK Ramesh had been appointed Additional Vice-Chancellor of the National Law School of India (NLSIU), Bangalore. Professor Ramesh will be in charge till Professor Krishnaswamy takes over.
