BREAKING: Former CJI Ranjan Gogoi nominated to Rajya Sabha [Read Notification]

Former Chief Justice of India, Ranjan Gogoi has been nominated as a member of the Rajya Sabha.

A notification to this effect was issued by the Central Government today.

The notification states,

"In exercise of the powers conferred by sub-clause (a) of clause (1) article 80 of the Constitution of India, read with clause (3) of that article, the President is pleased to nominate Shri Ranjan Gogoi to the Council of States to fill the vacancy caused due to the retirement of one of the nominated member."

Ranjan Gogoi retired from the Supreme Court on November 17, 2019.

He began his career in judicial service as a judge of Gauhati High Court in 2001 before being transferred to Punjab & Haryana High Court in 2010.

He was appointed Chief Justice of Punjab & Haryana High Court in 2011 before being elevated to the Supreme Court on April 23, 2012.

Last year, Justice AK Patnaik who is investigating the alleged conspiracy to frame Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi in the sexual harassment complaint brought against him filed a report before that the Supreme Court that this issue requires further inquiry.

According to reports, Justice Patnaik has asked the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), the Intelligence Bureau (IB), and the Delhi Police to probe the alleged role of a corporate-underworld nexus in the apparent attempt to frame CJI Ranjan Gogoi.

Currently, there are 12 members nominated by the President of India. 11 have already been appointed and the appointment of Former CJI Ranjan Gogoi will complete the list that includes nominated members like Subramanian Swamy, Boxer Mary Kom, Swapan Dasgupta and others.
